Figs thrive primarily in climates where summers are cool and winters are mild. They require lots of sunlight to fully ripen, as well as soil conditions that provide excellent drainage to prevent their roots from drowning and the fruit from splitting. Typical soil conditions that suit these fruits well include light sand, rich loam, heavy clay and limestone.
