Commonly referred to as the fruit capital of the world, Washington's Yakima Valley wasn't always known for its apples. The valley's early pioneers, who raised cattle and sheep, planted the region's first apple trees with the sole intent of adding a little variety to their diets. Thanks to the hot, dry climate, low rainfall and ample irrigation from the nearby Cascadian Mountain Range, Yakima Valley now boasts over 78,000 flourishing acres of apple orchards.
